For this Sparta, New Jersey landscape design project, the homeowners wanted us to create a welcoming outdoor space for dining and entertaining a large number of guests. It was to flow effortlessly from their backdoor to the new pool area we would also be constructing. Additionally, the new space’s design needed to integrate seamlessly with owners’ existing home, avoiding an “added-on look.”
The project included an outdoor kitchen with an offset dining area for smaller gatherings, plus a larger patio space with space for a fire-pit for entertaining large groups, and finally a separate pool and hot tub area. We decided a terraced approach would allow us to create dedicated spaces for different activities while keeping each area easily accessible.
This multi-stage project required significant property grading and tree removal, particularly for the pool and patio installation. Delineating the property by activity yet maintaining its wonderful sense of spaciousness involved creating low, stone walls and planting elements to define spaces without closing them in. These features further provided a sense of privacy without being isolating.
The sinuous design provided a naturally fluid feel to the space, emphasized with elements such as the custom-made flagstone coping, cut and chiseled by hand to ensure perfect curves and edges. Other design highlights included the broad, bluestone steps leading effortlessly to the pool’s beautiful, natural-edged flagstone patios, and the cut bluestone cap for the seat wall surrounding the dining space. The wide, lush lawn area around the pool and home infused a feeling of openness, while the serene backdrop view of towering trees provided the finishing touch to this home oasis.
