Protection From Ticks
Protect Your Family And Pets From Lymes Disease And Ehrlichiosis
We are surrounded by the beauties of nature. From the farms of Warwick, to the Lakes of Branchville, the Hills of Sparta, the open spaces in our Tri State area abound. Whatever your preference you can find it here. Along with these blessings of natural beauty there are some dangers. Aside from bears in the woods and deer on the highways, ticks are not to be ignored. Thses little beasts carrry two diseases that can severly impact the quality of life for those that contract them, Lyme and Ehrlichiosis.
Ticks can only thrive in shady areas. Wooded areas, underbrush, dense landscape plantings, and woodpiles are all prime tick habitat. Due totheir size ticks do not travel far on their own. Typically they move around on a host animal such as a deer, chipmunk, mouse, etc. When they have finished feeding on that host they will drop off, finding a place to settle while they digest their meal. To find a new host they will wait in a spot where a passing animal or person is likely to brush against them and pick them up. THey can even drop from tree branches if the sense the warmth of a potential host below them. Different varieties of ticks are more active at different times of the year, but the risk of being bitten is real whenever the temperature is above 50 degrees.
Farmside Landscape & Design can help minimize the risk to your family and pets from ticks. We can treat the areas of tick habitat to redce the tick population, so there is less likelihood of being bitten. Our clients have seen excellent results by treating in April, July, and October. After each application the tick population is severly reduced, but it can clinb again over time, particularly if you have lots of wildlife moving through your property.
Farmside offers a choice of materials as well. Most ofetn we use Permethrin, the active ingredient in many flea collars for pets. This gives a residual control as well as a knockdown effect, so that ticks that may have survived the spraying will be controlled if they caome in contact with reside on plants, woodpiles, etc for 10-14 days depending on the weather. For a softer approach we can use a spray made from Garlic, which Ticks cannot tolerate. For those who don't want spraying, we can install Damminix Tubes, cardboard tubes filled with Permethrin coated cotton. These are placed in areas where mice and chipmunks can find them. They take the cotton home to line their nests, the material gets on their fur, and any ticks they meet up with are controlled.
